Reimagining Conwell Street at Route 6
Here’s another of our 1950s-era intersections that is in need of updates, and this time the focus is on bicycling. (Google Map)
When Conwell Street was rebuilt a couple of years ago to add bike lanes and a sidewalk, they gave up when they got to this intersection. The current bike lanes just disappear, despite the addition of bicycle detectors at the light. This visualization continues the bike lanes through the intersection to Race Point Rd., adds a “biker bar” leaning rail at the light, and adds a wayfinding sign to let folks on bikes know where they’re going.
These improvements could be made today with no construction – just paint, a sign pole, and a “biker bar.”
Elements used in this sketch:
Materials needed to implement:
- Paint
- A sign pole and bike wayfinding sign
- Two Dero “Biker Bars,” – one for each side of the intersection.
Existing conditions:
- This is Provincetown’s only fully signalized intersection
- Ample pavement width to continue a bike lane through the intersection
- Slip lanes with no indication that someone might be riding a bike
- Bicycle detectors at the traffic light stop line
- 20 MPH posted speed limit on Conwell Street; 45 MPH posted speed limit on Route 6.
